The general gist of it was to identify the high level ambition and break it down into smaller actions or tasks that could lead the organization, often involving a software project to make all these magical efforts more effective in the end.Īt this point I started to grow a larger interest for software solutions and product management which lead me into study some programming. Other methods that is often used here is the SMART framework to create specific goals that are measurable and time bound. Pretty much the same as the OKR framework, identify the objective for some initiative and then break it down into smaller impacts or actions that can be measured or mapped into a key result that built up towards the objective. Here we often used methods like Impact mapping to better break down a goal oriented approach to changes in the business. This lead me to evolve within Business Consulting and working tight together with customers and setting myself in their organizational shoes and processes to better understand potential improvement. So it felt natural for me to work with project management and structure different aspects of a software project. Introduced to Excel I started to create a database for all the VHS tapes so I easier could search and manage all the films we had. I have strong memories for always structure my homework in hierarchical bullet points or dividing my room into sections for toys. It seemed extremely basic to me and I think its pretty much because I am hard coded with the fragmentation principle since birth. Break a project into more manageable pieces and plan them accordingly in relation to time, budget and scope. I would say the foundation of project management in general is pretty much the whole principle. I started my career within in software development as a project management and solution architect for different software projects and here the fragmentation principle is super clear. I found this very interesting and thought I would share my insights to this.

It is called fragmentation principle and is related to bounded rationality theory as human decision making. This has been the same thought I had so many times before and my revelation was connecting different named methods and framework together by the same principle.

My thinking was, like many times before, "How do I split this up into more manageable pieces.?" Right there and then I pretty much felt like a character in a movie seeing the matrix unravel in front of my eyes, connecting the dots to a secret equation of life. I had this revelations on a tram in a rainy Gothenburg one morning reflecting on a large feature we were working on at the moment and how we should tackle it. This approach can be found in a lot of situations and have the same ambition every time, make stuff easier to handle. Namely the principal of breaking stuff down into smaller pieces. Having been in some different work situations I started to reflect on my experiences in different projects and roles and could map the patterns in pretty much everything I've done, also to a lot of stuff in my private life. Some years ago I started to see connections in different things, a kind of pattern that I started to see in a lot of different frameworks and methodologies I worked with and came across in my line of work. You might recognize the title as the opening line in one of the most poetic creations from the early 2000 (a great music period), namely "Last Resort" by the philosopher group Papa Roach.
